Summary:
The speechwriter will work closely with the Executive Director and other surgeons to develop speeches, remarks, educational talks, columns, and related materials. In addition, the speechwriter will author bylined articles and other copy for ACS publications, as needed, including the Bulletin.
This exempt position will report to the Director, Integrated Communications in the Division of Integrated Communications. It is based in our Chicago office and is a hybrid role: 2 days per week in the office/3 days per week remote, planning to move to 3 days per week in the office/2 days per week remote after Labor Day, 2022.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Write monthly Executive Director's Update for the Bulletin on behalf of the Executive Director.
- Write grand rounds and leadership talks for Executive Director, as well as create related PowerPoints.
- Write remarks for the Clinical Congress and other ACS events on behalf of surgeon leaders.
- Write bylined feature articles and other copy for ACS publications, such as the Bulletin.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or related field is required.
- 4+ years of communications, writing, or related experience is preferred.
- Experience related to health care and/or experience writing speeches on behalf of health care leaders is highly desirable.
- Ability to articulate complex topics into an easy-to-read way.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and Adobe Acrobat.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills necessary to effectively interact with all levels of organization.
- Attention to detail, multi-tasking, and organizational skills.
- Display high level of energy and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to plan and prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
- Ability to establish strong working relationships with all division teams and management.
Physical/Work Environment: Fast paced with significant people interaction. No lifting over 20 pounds, minimal reaching bending and stooping. Performs work in a normal office environment with long hours in front of the computer.
Other Necessary Requirements: Evening or weekend duties may be required. Minimal travel for activities such as out of town meetings is required.
