APA increasingly employs data analyses to make strategic decisions to better serve our members and communities. We are seeking an intelligent and creative individual who is motivated to join APA’s technology team and help lead APA’s data analysis efforts in a collaborative, fast paced, agile environment.
The Data Analyst serves as a steward and enabler for APA’s data, leading efforts to better understand and use data. The role brings analytical and technical expertise to ensure data quality and accuracy, and then to organize, process, design, and present it in ways that help business stakeholders make better decisions.
Business questions translated into technical questions that can be answered with data – taking complicated problems and building simple solutions that create insight.
Data organized and presented in ways that tell meaningful stories and support evidence-based decision-making.
The production, acquisition, and curation of data aligned with analytical priorities, and analytical priorities aligned with APA’s annual strategic scope of work and organizational goals.
Best practices for consuming and understanding data fostered throughout the organization.
Analysis. Conducts technical data analyses, including regression, statistical, and predictive, analyses. Identifies trends, correlations, patterns, predictions, and actionable insights from data. Approaches analysis with curiosity, creativity, and an eye for discovering what drives business value.
Data Understanding. Collaborates with subject matter experts to understand their analytical goals, providing focus for questions to ask of data, and clarifying key metrics. Translates between the business domain and technical domain in order to recommend specific types of technical analyses in response to business questions. Understands and articulates the “Art of the Possible” with data analysis, using this understanding to promote a culture of data-informed decision-making throughout the organization.
Reporting. Designs and builds rich, interactive visualizations that distill data into comprehensible structures and presentations. Assists others in delivering self-service reports by offering guidance and training on reporting tools, and by recommending techniques for presenting and consuming data effectively.
Platform Management. Designs, implements, and maintains the Business Intelligence platform (Power BI), including connections to data sources, overall structure and user experience, security, and metadata.
Data Modeling. Builds data models in the Business Intelligence platform’s semantic layer, ensuring that model structure is conducive to the analysis needs, and that terms adhere to agreed-upon data definitions.
Data Definition. Maintains APA’s data dictionary, so that both business and technical users share a common understanding of data, its purpose, and its meaning in reports and analyses.
Process Improvement. Recommends opportunities for improving data processes, including improvements to data collection, integrity, quality, efficiency, and structure. Recommends protocols for handling, processing, and cleaning data.
Data Strategy. Creates strategic approaches to the acquisition, organization, analysis, and delivery of data to support business objectives. Aligns data strategy to APA’s annual statement of work and business goals.
Proven analytic skills, including experience with core analytical processes and tools such as regression analysis, machine learning, and statistics
Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to describe data concepts to both technical and business team members
Experience mining, evaluating, analyzing, and visualizing data
Experience with business intelligence platforms, preferably Power BI
Experience with technical writing, such as documenting requirements, data rules, and training
Strong query-writing skills required, and experience with scripting preferred (e.g. Python)
Experience working with a Data Warehouse environment, and with Microsoft SQL, Power BI and Azure environments preferred
Experience with Agile methodology preferred
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, or Statistics

APA Dynamic Office Environment
Beginning January 2022, we’ll be shifting to a dynamic work environment that will bring those of us in the Chicagoland area together in person two days a week, Tuesday, and Thursday.?We’ll use this time to rekindle relationships, build new ones and connect with each other formally and informally in a way we can’t do online.?The other three days can be worked remotely or in the office—whatever each staff member prefers.?
