The American Sportfishing Association (ASA), a D.C. Metro area trade association representing sportfishing manufacturers, retailers and stakeholders, is seeking a Manager of Public Affairs to support the communications needs of the association.
The position reports directly to the Vice President of Communications and coordinates directly with the Vice President of Government Affairs. The successful candidate will promote science-based fisheries management and habitat conservation policies and the business of the association to endemic and non-endemic audiences and stakeholders.
The manager will assist the Communications and Government Affairs teams with all aspects of communications, marketing, promotion of government affairs activities and media relations. Day-to-day activities include research and writing, media outreach, coordination of all related Government Affairs communications activities, interaction and support of member communications needs, as well as general support of Communications department activities. The ideal candidate has strong written and verbal communications skills as well as work experience in a Congressional office, trade/non-profit association or similar. A working knowledge of PowerPoint, social media, marketing software and electronic newsletter publication is also required.
Must be able to work independently; appropriately and accurately represent the association in front of members, legislators/policymakers and public; support concurrent activities and multiple staff members; show initiative and self-motivation; demonstrate strong organizational skills; and display professionalism and poise.
Design, develop and implement timely communications strategies to promote ASA’s legislative policies and priorities at the federal, state and local levels.
Work closely with ASA’s Government Affairs staff, the Communications staff and associated contractors to support and promote ASA’s advocacy and business efforts to bring positive change to recreational fishing.
Write press releases, op-eds, letters-to-the-editor, talking points, position papers and newsletter content, securing placement of content in local and national media.
Closely track media exposure and recognize trends in new media opportunities, recommending new tactics to shift with the changing public relations climate.
Coordinate Government Affairs-related press events. Pitch and organize interviews with reporters and similar content creators, respond to media inquiries and develop relationships with media and influencers.
Develop member press-related outreach activities and materials.
Implement a comprehensive industry communications strategy that ensures ASA’s members are engaged in promoting ASA’s government affairs efforts.
Coordinate with the Communications team to ensure digital and other sources of content are relevant, accurate and timely, as well as shared.
Assemble a recap of ASA-related news articles for sharing with staff and to members in end of end-of-month Policy Watch.
The successful candidate will have:
BS/BA degree in communications, journalism, public affairs or similar.
Five+ years of communications experience with a Congressional office, association or related non-profit or agency.
Demonstrated understanding of public relations and media outreach as well as strong oral and written communications skills.
Solid understanding of federal legislative affairs and policy.
Knowledge and ability to edit/proof documents for error-free work.
Strong ability to prioritize, work independently and meet deadlines on multiple tasks and in a team environment.
Ability to cultivate meaningful relationships with media and influencers.
Able to work and manage schedule in a fast-paced environment.
Proficiency with entire Microsoft Office Suite of products. Intermediate to advanced PowerPoint or other design software.
Knowledge and understanding of social media platforms.
Knowledge of databases and communications software a plus.
Detail oriented and exhibits a high degree of accuracy.
Possesses excellent interpersonal skills and ability to coordinate well between the Communications and Government Affairs departments.
Strong ability to prioritize, work independently and meet deadlines.
