Many of today's most pressing public policy issues across a wide spectrum of concerns, such as climate change, retirement security, health equity, and so many others, require the sound application of actuarial principles. As the Assistant Director of Public Policy at the American Academy of Actuaries (the Academy), you will report to the Director of Public Policy and assist in the development of strategic planning for the Academy’s work on those public policy issues. You will assist the director in overseeing 6 policy analysts and an administrative assistant. In this role, you will coordinate and execute activities and projects for our five public policy practice councils – including reviewing comment letters, monographs, issue briefs, testimony, white papers, and other public policy statements created by actuarial volunteer committees. We assist public policymakers on all levels by providing thought leadership, objective expertise, and actuarial advice on health, casualty, life insurance, pension and retirement policy, and risk management and financial reporting issues. Our practice area committees and work groups cover a range of topics from public programs such as Social Security and Medicare, health insurance, life insurance, automobile insurance, cyber risk, pensions, and financial sector reforms and more.
You will perform robust reviews of public policy publications before dissemination and manage timelines and publication deliverables from across our entire portfolio of policy work. You will also coordinate Academy projects with outside stakeholders and ensure that all published documents adhere to our standards and governance procedures, align with our mission, and represent us as providing objective, independent, nonpartisan information.
The Academy is a 19,500+ member professional association whose members include consultants, corporate executives and staff, regulators, government officials, academicians, and retired actuaries. We are a nonpartisan and objective organization, allowing our analyses to lead to the conclusions. The Academy also sets qualification, practice, and professionalism standards for actuaries credentialed by one or more of the five U.S.-based actuarial organizations in the United States.
