Soroptimist was formed in 1921 in Oakland, California, at a time when women were not permitted to join service organizations. Their name, loosely translated from Latin, means best for women. Today, they have about 30,000 members and 150,000 online supporters in 20 countries and territories. They are one of five federations that make up Soroptimist International, which has clubs in more than 120 countries throughout the world.
SIA’s Dream Programs, the Live Your Dream Awards® and Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls® are primarily delivered locally by Soroptimist clubs and members. Learn about the importance of education in achieving economic empowerment and the impact of the Dream Programs in SIA’s research paper, Education and Economic Empowerment: The Future for Women and Girls.
As they celebrate 100 years of existence, SIA has begun working on a Big Goal -- to invest in the dreams of half a million women and girls by 2031. A 3-year fundraising initiative will be launched in September 2021 to build capacity at all levels of the organization to achieve the Big Goal.
