The primary responsibility of the Director of Membership is to provide the leadership necessary to support the core association strategy and mission, while overseeing the strategic direction and management of NPMA membership development, recruitment, and retention; and project management of association database for the organization as a whole.
Membership Recruitment & Retention Development
Develop and deliver the strategy and service necessary to meet the association goals of growing and maintaining membership
Manages relationships with targeted associations that will increase membership and participation in NPMA’s activities
Reviews recommendations and/or recommends membership campaigns based on findings of market research, process analyses, and/or other measurements.
Develops membership marketing and promotional materials, including applications, welcome kits, certificates, membership cards, and other collateral, in collaboration with the marketing department
Manages, tracks, and evaluates all membership and renewal activities, including recruitment, new member onboarding, and renewal processes
Creates and directs a first-year member program that increases new member retention and engagement
Produces monthly and annual reports on membership status
Develops state leadership program
Membership Data & Analytics
Ensure technology is utilized throughout the department as a way of delivering services in a timely and cost effective manner
Analyze and interpret data to clearly articulate the need for specific strategies
Analyzes recruitment and retention reports to develop campaigns and track results
Manages data integrity with membership coordinator to ensure: membership data is reviewed periodically to ensure accuracy; lists supplied by members are cross-referenced with NPMA’s database for prospective members; and statistical reports are generated to analyze and compare each year’s results
Evaluate all membership categories regarding member need and satisfaction, organizational objectives, cost, and revenue.
Reviews and measures membership trend analyses, by regularly providing trend reports to identify and recommend improvements for NPMA retention and member experience.
Creates regular statistical analyses and reports based on membership retention productivity and performance measurements.
Member Services, Benefits & Budget Management
Prepare, support, and monitor annual budget for the membership department
Ensures monthly financial tracking of membership, in collaboration with the finance department.
Develop a collaborative working relationship with the other departments, ensuring that membership campaigns and support systems are integrated with program development, reflect association priorities and respond to the existing and anticipated needs of members
Explore new opportunities for the association to seek non-dues revenue programs and enhancing the overall member services through NPMA’s affinity programs
Recommends and develops new member programs and services
Represents the association at various conferences, meetings and networking events as needed
Attracts, recruit, retain and motivate a highly trained and qualified staff.

Requires a bachelor’s degree
Experience with Aptify strongly preferred,
Requires a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in membership management (non-profit trade association experience preferred)
Must possess strong initiative and be results-oriented
Requires excellent written and oral communication and project management skills
Requires intermediate to expert-level knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (i.e. Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and Web applications.
Must be able to work on project teams and share accountability/reward for achieving broader goal.
