Professional association located in Bethesda, MD is seeking a Director, Publications Operations. The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) represents 24,000 members, has a staff of 30, and an annual budget of $8 million. NASP represents school psychology and supports the work of school psychologists to enhance the learning and mental health of all children and youth.
Job Purpose
The Director, Publications Operations will be responsible for the business operations and advancement of NASP’s book and journal publishing and supporting other online content products. Primary responsibilities for the position include publications operations (accounting, inventory, order fulfillment); oversight of publications development for print, digital and online products; and collaboration with marketing and communications staff to ensure that publications are consistently promoted across the organization. In addition, the director will develop an organizational strategy for the future of NASP publications; support organizational strategic initiatives; serve as staff liaison to the Publications Committee; and manage and maintain positive relationships with NASP leaders, key partners and publication authors. The Director supervises one related position and reports to the Chief Operating Officer. This is an exempt level position.
NASP produces a newspaper, Communiqué, published in-house 8 times per year, and a scholarly journal, School Psychology Review, published with a corporate partner. The book catalog is comprised primarily of in-house publications available through www.nasponline.org.
Responsibilities:
Publications Operations
Manage publications sales, fulfillment and inventory functions.
Manage online bookstore (web updates, marketing, pricing).
Manage publications booth at the Annual Convention.
Reconcile monthly sales and inventory; update monthly financial summary reports for book publications, royalties, PREPaRE curriculum, and online web catalogs for professional development offerings.
Analyze data and monitor progress against revenue goals.
Maintain and monitor publication accounts in accounting system (post entries, batches, etc.); assist with other finance department support as needed.
Supervise Manager of Publications and manage day-to-day operations of the department.
Manage customer support for publications related calls and emails.
Publication and Journal Management
Manage RFP process for book manuscript solicitations, outside review of manuscripts and follow-up.
Serve as point of contact for authors and editors.
Serve as primary point of contact with NASP’s publishing partners (including contract compliance, financial tracking, assessment of internal support needs, publishing reporting, etc.); maintain productive working relationships with partners.
Support the production process (scheduling of project, monitoring content deadlines, consulting and facilitating if questions or problems arise, testing of new technologies/formats, etc.)
Explore and develop a comprehensive strategy for the future of NASP publications.
Oversee copyright permissions.
Budget development for publications related budgets.
Manage other related projects as needed.
Serve as Staff Liaison for Publications Committee.
Other duties as assigned by the COO or Executive Director

Essential Skills and Experience:
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in business administration (with accounting minor) or related field and at least 5 years of proven experience with managing a publications program including the operational duties in an association environment.
Proven accounting and accounting software experience (sales, inventory, A/P and G/L modules).
Knowledge of education and mental health issues is desirable.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Excellent organizational and project management skills.
Experience with association management software, preferably iMIS.
Experience with MS Office (proficient with Word and Excel); web and mobile technologies; web content management a plus.
Proven attention to detail, the ability to multi-task, and the ability to set and meet realistic goals and timelines.
Effectively work with staff, both individually and in a team environment.
Effectively work with volunteer leaders.
Minimal travel required.
Key Internal Relationships: Executive Director, Chief Operating Officer, staff members in each of the relevant departments.
Key External Relationships: Customers, vendors, key NASP leaders, NASP members, convention attendees.
