The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is in search of a motivated and hard working Government Affairs Associate to join our team in Arlington Heights, Illinois!
The Government Affairs Associate works to analyze and influence policy proposals at the state and federal levels. This position works with the department’s other Government Affairs Associates to execute ASPS policy tracking, analysis and drafting of comments; provide recommendations on organizational responses to key issues; and execute the operational work of ASPS grassroots initiatives for all state level policy. The Government Affairs Associate also supports federal advocacy and key ASPS initiatives, including PlastyPAC, the Legislative Advocacy Committee, the ASPS Advocacy Summit, and advocacy publications.
ISSUE TRACKING, ANALYSIS AND ENGAGEMENT
Work with other Government Affairs Associates to monitor and report on legislative and regulatory activity impacting plastic surgery
Track state policy issues
Regularly brief the Government Affairs team on developments related to key legislation
Work with state-focused consultants to develop thorough and efficient systems of policy tracking and reporting. Monitor their performance and communicate issues to the Director
Conduct policy research and provide recommendations for how issues and proposals can be used in developing advocacy materials
Work with other Government Affairs Associates to write comment letters to key state policymaking audiences when priority issues arise. Support federal advocacy as-needed
Produce analyses and reference tools to support advocacy
Analyze existing state laws and regulations to support advocacy strategy, response and messaging
Identify and capitalize on opportunities to proactively engage and shape policy development on key ASPS priorities
Work with other Government Affairs Associates to create resources – such as talking points, issue briefs, member communications, and key contact identification processess – that activate physician members at the grassroots level
Respond to individual ASPS physician member policy inquiries from states in your portfolio
ADVOCACY AND GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS
Manage grassroots advocacy initiatives for the states in your portfolio
Lead the development of issue- and legislation-specific pages on the ASPS Advocacy in Action site
Create issue-, legislation-, and advocacy campaign-specific letters for use by ASPS member advocates
ADVOCACY PROGRAM SUPPORT
Support Director, Government Affairs Associate, and Washington, DC-based consultants in the execution of biennial ASPS Advocacy Summit and biennialregional fly-ins
Work with other Government Affairs Associates in developing briefing materials and background information
Help execute a marketing plan for the event developed by the Government Affairs Associate and ASPS Communications team
Help execute the invitation process, registration management and attendee tracking
Help execute pre- and post-meeting attendee communications about meeting logistics and agendas
POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE
Support staffing the PlastyPAC Board of Governors:
Help maintain ASPS political candidate assessment materials
Prepare and disseminate committee minutes
Help generate solicitation materials for use in fundraising campaigns
Track and report on PAC events involving ASPS staff or members
Support exectution of the PlastyPAC Member Benefits Program as needed
LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY COMMITTEE
Support the staff liaison of the ASPS Legislative Advocacy Committee
Provide specified project-based support to staff liaison on committee-led projects and initiatives
Prepare and disseminate committee minutes
ASPS PUBLICATION CONTRIBUTIONS
Write weekly Activity Updates to ASPS leadership on key developments federally and in your states. Contribute to monthly Activity Updates to the Legislative Advocacy Committee
Work with other Government Affairs Associates to develop summary reports of ASPS advocacy work to be shared with ASPS physician members following the end of state legislative sessions and the end of the year
Contribute to stories in ASPS publications on state policy and advocacy
Help develop monthly state updates for Plastic Surgery News
Contribute content on state policy and political developments, and ASPS action in these areas, for Advocacy Matters and ASPS Focus
Work with Health Policy Manager and Government Affairs Associate to staff the ASPS AMA delegation and the Plastic Surgery Caucus
Participate with your Government Affiars Associate colleague in the Truth in Advertising Coalition, the Health Coalition on Liability and Access, the Trauma Coalition, the Ambulatory Surgical Coalition and the Stop Medical Taxes Coalition
Education: Bachelor Degree in political science, public policy, health administration, or health
related field. Communications training with political/policy experience and/or an
advanced degree in related field desired.
Experience: At least two to three years direct experience in any or all of the following:
Working in a policy position or a non-entry level communications position for an elected official
Lobbying at the state or federal level
Monitoring and responding to state or federal legislative and regulatory issues
Knowledge of state and federal legislative and regulatory processes.
Strong policy research skills.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Strong interpersonal, organization, and political skills.
Computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office, project management software (Asana experience a plus), grassroots advocacy software and political action committee management software.
Experience in health/medical association management, health care delivery, and/or third-party reimbursement a plus.
Certifications: None required
