The National Art Education Association (NAEA) is seeking a full-time Editorial Assistant to assist and support the Publications Manager in production of Association publications. These include its flagship periodicals, marketing pieces, books, and its annual convention programs.
In particular, NAEA is seeking a team player. The candidate should have work experience in collaborating closely with others on deadlines as well as be flexible and open to feedback.
Work closely with the Publications Manager, and members of the Publications team, to edit and/or proofread a newsletter (5 issues/year), a magazine (6 issues/year), an academic journal (4 issues/year), and regular marketing materials. Proofread other projects and special publications as needed, enforcing editorial standards consistent with NAEA house Style Guide and the current edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA).
Organize submissions and deadlines for newsletter. Edit submissions, maintain correspondence and deadlines with columnists, prepare files for production, and proof final layouts.
Edit, proof, and/or fact-check Association marketing and informational e-blasts, advertisements, website text, and other promotional materials. (Important note: this position entails little writing; the majority of the work is copyediting.)
Assist in other production-related projects such as checking image permissions and usage as submitted to Editorial Manager program.
Proof/edit and share files through file-sharing platforms such as Google Docs, Dropbox, and Acrobat.
Work with the Publications Manager and/or graphic designer to proof layouts of periodicals and books from designers or publishers.
Perform research in response to publication inquiries from authors, editors, and Association members as needed.
Work both collaboratively and independently on multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment, as well as be flexible and comfortable with feedback.
BA in Publishing, Communications, or related degree.
Eye for detail a must! Strong copyediting and proofreading skills, as well as experience, are required. Familiarity with APA Style Manual preferred.
Minimum 5 years of professional experience, working in a nonprofit environment preferred. At least 3 years of direct publications experience with membership organization helpful
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat, including Word tracked changes and PDF editing tools. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, Mac, and database management skills preferred. Experience with Editorial Manager or similar online submission systems a plus.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, marketing, and organizational skills. Ability to organize, write, and coordinate communications to ensure production deadlines are met.
