American Humane seeks a dynamic, driven, experienced Director, Major Gifts – Eastern Region to develop and manage a portfolio of major gift donors and prospects. This position is based at American Humane’s national headquarters in Washington, DC and reports directly to the Chief Marketing Officer.

The Director, Major Gifts – Eastern Region is responsible for seeking out opportunities and developing initiatives to identify, cultivate and solicit prospects to ensure a strong base of ongoing financial support for the organization. The Director will, in collaboration with the Chief Marketing Officer and other fundraising staff, be responsible for developing and managing a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors focused in strategic areas of the East Coast and Mideast regions.
Develop and maintain a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors capable of giving significant contributions to American Humane.
Develop and implement management strategies and approaches aimed at advancing donors into higher levels of giving and ultimately planned gifts.
Steward donors who have already made contributions to American Humane.
Present regular updates to Chief Marketing Officer and CEO.
Work and travel with staff to plan and conduct outreach, visits, presentations, and events.
Build relationships with donors and ensure all major giving donors receive appropriate, consistent recognition and an accounting of the impact of their gift on the organization.
Prospect by doing research and making phone calls to donors and financial advisors to develop a pipeline of long-term support.
Produce high quality proposals, reports and other cultivation, solicitation and stewardship materials as needed.
Enter and track all activities, actions, call reports and deadlines in Raisers Edge Database and other tracking systems.
Essential experience, knowledge, skills and abilities:
Bachelor’s degree required.
7- 10 years fundraising experience in major gifts strongly preferred.
Proven fundraising track record with experience identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding high level donors.
CFRE credential desired but not required.
Comfortable researching and analyzing large groups of data to uncover major giving prospects.
Demonstrate drive and an ownership mentality.
Possess a client service attitude and ability to think on your feet as well as maintain positive demeanor at all times.
Conduct oneself with confidence on phone calls and in donor meetings.
Ability to emotionally and colorfully describe the incredible work done by American Humane to help animals.
Self-disciplined, able to prioritize tasks in order to meet deadlines, strong work ethic.
Demonstrated proficiency in computer technology including applications for project and data management and electronic calendars (Raiser’s Edge, Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook preferred). Ability to quickly learn software specific to the department or institution.
Strong written (including proof reading and editing) and oral communication skills, including the ability to briefly summarize the essence of issues and means to address them. Use appropriate grammar in verbal or written form.
Sound judgment and discretion in handling and securing confidential information, as well as the ability to conduct oneself in a highly professional manner.
Flexibility to work as part of a team or independently to meet goals in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Self-directed to take action and resolve issues.
Physical demands and work environment:
Position based in the Washington, DC headquarters office.
Standard working office environment; must be o.k. with animals in the office occasionally and at events.
National travel will be required, estimated up to 50%, including frequent trips to target areas in the eastern half of the U.S., focused largely on the east coast, including New York, NY and Palm Beach, FL.
Some evening and weekend hours will be required for outreach or event participation.
