Job Description

The American Society of Appraisers (ASA), a professional society in Reston, VA is immediately seeking an exceedingly creative Director of Marketing and Communications.  The successful candidate will be an open, communicative and confident professional who brings creativity, imagination, vision, and charisma to the position.  The candidate will be a seasoned marketing/communications professional with management experience and a demonstrated capacity to work effectively in a busy, not-for-profit environment. Responsibilities:
Marketing and Communications:

  • Manage day-to-day activity of Society’s marketing/communications, advertising and public relations efforts.
  • Set and guide the strategy for all communications, marketing, website, public relations messages and collateral to consistently articulate ASA’s mission and ensure ASA is viewed as the primary source, disseminator and conduit of information within its diverse network and constituent base.
  • Collaborate effectively with Society’s constituent groups and assist them in achieving their marketing goals.
  • Collaborate with the COO and senior leadership to develop communications strategies that will broaden programmatic reach and deepen message impact.
  • Develop, facilitate and evaluate ASA’s annual marketing/communications plan and budget.
  • Develop and refine ASA’s “core” messages to ensure organizational consistency.
  • Put communications vehicles in place to create momentum and awareness as well as to test the effectiveness of communications activities.
  • Identify significant media and PR opportunities that can be leveraged to support ASA’s work, and create and implement plans to exploit them.
  • Oversee organizational response to media inquiries about ASA.
  • Coordinate webpage maintenance–ensure that new and consistent information (article links, stories, and events) is posted regularly.
  • Generate online content that engages audience segments and leads to measurable action. Decide who, where, and when to disseminate.
  • Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral, including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, online materials, etc.
  • Track and measure the level of engagement within the network over time.
  • Coordinate and organize annual meeting promotions and event scripts.
  • Manage all media contacts.

    Management:
  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of the marketing and communications department operations, including fostering relationships with two full-time staff; develop cross-functional teams to take advantage of staff talents and experience.
  • Implement management and training strategies that support ASA’s vision of member service and service standards.
  • Develop, monitor and control department budgets - review and approve all payables related to marketing and communications.
  • Implement strategies for continuous quality control and improvement.
  • Work with staff to document department processes, policies and procedures.

Additional Salary Information: Salary is commensurate with experience.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • College degree required in marketing, communications, or a related field.  Advanced degree preferred.
  • Five to seven (5-7) years progressive communications/marketing experience that includes a blend of electronic and print media, social media, public relations, and media relations.
  • Minimum five (5) years management experience.
  • Exceptional writing/editing and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong track record of positioning an organization to achieve tangible outcomes in a highly competitive communications environment.
  • Strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently.
  • High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels.
