Oversee key journal processes, staff, and partners to ensure the regular publication of high quality peer-reviewed content of maximum relevance to the CHEST audience and readership, delivered in formats that enable ease of consumption. Liaise with the Editor in Chief and senior Editorial Board members to identify and operationalize opportunities to improve and expand the impact of the journal. Maintain the highest standards and policies, editorial excellence and quality assurance, effective peer review processes, and timely article and complementary content production, Ensure all activities occur on time and on budget with clearly articulated measures of success.
Provide managerial oversight / serve as coach and mentor to journal staff and the annual Richard S. Irwin Fellow in Medical Publishing. Manage the work of consultants, vendors and partners, including the commercial publisher, ensuring budget adherence, setting and monitoring expectations of quality and timeliness. Provide regular reports to management on defined metrics, and ensure regular performance and goal reviews are conducted against defined metrics and in accordance with CHEST policy.
Serve as primary contact for matters related to peer review, journal production (print & online), publication policies, ethical inquiries, and annual planning/strategy administration and execution to the Editor in Chief (EIC) and senior Editorial Board Members (ie, Deputy, Associate, Section Editors). Develop reports for leadership on related activities on request.
Manage the publication, including defining and communicating monthly issue lineups with the EIC and his/her designate(s), overseeing solicited content, proofreading and providing final issue approval, and adjudicating any issues that arise throughout the process. Serve as the primary liaison for commercial publisher’s production and web teams.
Liaise with external divisions and partners to develop annual marketing plans with clear, measurable objectives, and identify and execute on opportunities to further integrate the work of the journal with that of the broader organization. Communicate all new developments to the full CHEST staff and train key departments (eg, Customer Support Team, Marketing) to ensure clear communication of efforts.
Lead or oversee the coordination of special and/or complementary features, including CME resource centers, multimedia, video, virtual events, and VR/AR use to enhance utilization of content.
In collaboration with Web and User Experience team members, oversee and monitor the digital journal platform utilization and implement enhanced functionalities/improvements to drive engagement. Ensure appropriate journal-related information is posted on the main Association web site(s).
Coordinate and provide critical input on the development, execution and analysis of annual readership surveys. Monitor external metrics (eg, Kantar readership scores) and provide recommendations toward improving results.
Conduct periodic audits of peer review system, author/reviewer database, and production tracking to identify opportunities for improvement and increased efficiency.
Onboard new staff, partners, and editors, including the annually appointed Richard S. Irwin Fellow in Medical Publishing.
Create and maintain on an annual basis up to date policies and procedures for peer review, production, publication, and advertising.
Support the development of the annual budget and forecasts.
Stay abreast of developments and innovations in STM publishing and bring forward recommendations/innovations through the appropriate channels to keep CHEST at the fore.
Serve as a resource to staff throughout other divisions of the organization.
Complete other tasks and projects as assigned.
Provide support to members and constituents, emphasizing a customer-service, learner-centric approach to all interactions and promoting a responsive, positive environment.
Ensure adherence to all policies and procedures.
Work collaboratively with staff in other departments and divisions and subject matter experts to achieve shared goals.

Position Qualifications and Competencies:
Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or related field; or doctoral degree in medicine/scientific field or MPH.
5+ years of experience in medical editing and publishing, preferably at a peer-reviewed journal
Proficiency with AMA style, medical terminology, and International Committee of Medical Journal Editors policies
Staff, vendor, and budget management experience
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
Strong attention to detail
Project management and prioritization skills
Understanding of relational databases
Demonstrated ability to meet strict recurring deadlines
Experience with manuscript submission systems, preferably ScholarOne
Strong technology skills, particularly in database management and online platforms
Knowledge of pulmonary, cardiac, and/or thoracic terminology
