The National Council of Teachers of English, a vibrant and growing association that supports the teaching and learning of English and language arts across the preK– college spectrum, seeks a dynamic new member for its communications team who will use visual and digital resources to strengthen existing communications tools and channels as well as contribute to the creation of new ones.
Primary job responsibilities include
Capture expert visuals and videos of NCTE’s work in action, including a diverse array of members and membership groups, via photography and videography. Edit video and photos for use across NCTE’s channels, according to communication plans. Maintain a video and photo library that ensures easy employee access and inventory. Ensure that the website is kept updated with new images from this repository on a bimonthly basis; this requires facility with modifying images for the Web as well as managing pages on a WordPress platform.
Develop communications regarding NCTE’s work that are of specific interest to members. This can span the work of NCTE’s various programs and any other initiative benefitting NCTE’s members and mission.
Respond to daily interactions with NCTE constituents across all active social media platforms, providing warm, authentic, factual, and error-free responses. Response time expectations will be set by the Director of Communications, and a schedule will be developed to guard against burnout. These responsibilities may be shared in part with staff responsible for social media content posting.
Conceptualize, write, and manage the production process of targeted or specific communications (e.g., communication plans, stories, scripts, memos, articles, fliers, presentations, brochures) that are compelling, accurate, clear, in line with our brand voice, and delivered on time, in harmony with the communications team and at the direction of the Director of Communications. Ongoing work in this arena will involve regular strategic updates to content on the website that are pertinent to upcoming events, celebrations, or organizational highlights.
Other responsibilities that apply across the areas described above:
Working in collaboration with the communications team, provide recommendations on issue response efforts and outreach and engagement across NCTE priorities, including representing the organization and/or conducting visual documentation during meetings, events, and potential new outreach opportunities.
Contribute to the development of creative communication strategies across print and digital for all of NCTE’s communications, including The Council Chronicle.
Keep abreast of the latest industry standards, best practices, tools and technologies; advocate for practical experiments and measure success.
Maintain shared calendars, project-tracking documents, collaboration tools, and other administrative needs.
Qualified candidates will

Have a basic understanding of AP Style writing.
Be familiar with a variety of social media platforms.
Possess human relations skills, including understanding of audience needs, style flexing, receiving constructive feedback, active listening, and consistent positive attitude.
Be creative, versatile, conceptual, and practical; be comfortable with evolving deadlines and unexpected opportunities; have fast understanding and acceptance of strategies and goals needing to evolve.
Be both artistic and analytical, creating audiovisual and written communications that convey NCTE’s messages with positive impact.
Be mission-driven and collaborative, working with an expansive array of staff, strategic partners, and diverse membership groups in support of the organization.
Be self-motivated and detail-oriented with strong technical, communication, and organizational skills.
Be able to work independently and with others with excellent interpersonal and time management skills; maintain transparent workflow and contribute to fast-paced internal conversations.
Be dependable and flexible, with a sense of humor.
Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree required.
Experience with creative software: video and image editing are a must; other experience is desirable.
Strong visual style and thorough understanding of how typography, layout, color, images, and interactivity impact design and audience engagement.
Documented experience in communicating subjects (visually and in writing) sensitive to the subject and audience.
Versatile experience in publishing on social media platforms.
Experience with graphic design; print production with a membership organization and/or nonprofit is a plus.
Frequent travel, including attendance at the NCTE Annual Convention and other official events as assigned, is required.
Telecommuting is allowed.
