Directs the association’s overall communications programs and initiatives.
Develops communications strategy that drives broader awareness of APSP; positions APSP as the credible and primary industry voice; and promotes and protects the APSP brand.
Directly manages the association’s communication activities; overseeing and providing support to other departments and staff for communications messaging.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Collaborate with the President/CEO, the leadership team, senior staff and key components to develop communication strategies to effectively reach pertinent audiences, increase awareness of the association, and position APSP as the credible and primary authority for the swimming pool, spa and hot tub industries.
Keep abreast of industry trends, and identify and track challenges and emerging issues faced by the industry, the organization and it’s members. Work with the leadership team and senior staff to recognize communications opportunities and determine and execute appropriate solutions.
Manage APSP’s website and social media platforms and ensure content is relevant, focused and timely. Serve as the liaison with website vendors and develop strategies that will promote traffic to the website.
Ensure generation of print and online content that engages audience segments and leads to measurable action. Track and measure the level of audience engagement over time.
Actively identify, cultivate, and manage trade and public media relations to ensure coverage of APSP programs, government affairs activities, events, and other initiatives and projects.
Develop and manage targeted initiatives to promote the APSP brand and the industry to stakeholders, media, partners, and consumers.
Ensure that APSP’s logos and intellectual property are properly utilized and protected.
Direct research initiatives that (1) provide information and statistics pertinent to member business operations; (2) assess member needs and (3) provide insights to communicating effectively with pertinent audiences.
Develop and maintain a categorized library of organizational and industry information, and respond to inquiries about APSP and industry matters.
Support marketing communications efforts at trade shows and events. Seek and maintain industry engagement opportunities for APSP at other conferences and industry events of value to APSP’s brand building and message dissemination.
Oversee and support the positioning the association as an advocate of consumer safety.
Manage the use of external resources and vendors as they pertain to communications functions (e.g., writers, graphic designers, printers, agencies).
Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications functions including planning and development of the department’s budget, manage staff and staff development.
Reports to the President/CEO. Works with senior staff to develop policies, priorities, strategies and plans. Collaborates with department directors and staff to support development, implementation and administration of communications initiatives.
Must be a university graduate in business, communications, public relations, or have an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Must have a minimum of ten years combined senior management and communications experience in organizations involving stakeholders with diverse interests. Media, Capitol Hill and/or PR agency experience preferred. Association experience a plus.
Must be a strong communicator with excellent written, presentation, oral communication and interpersonal skills.
Must have strong leadership and consensus building skills, be able to motivate and influence others, and be a team player.
Must be a highly organized self-starter, be able to think creatively and strategically, have excellent judgment, willingness to roll up sleeves and get the job done, and be able to work in a changing environment.
Must have budget development and management experience.
Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, be familiar with database computer applications, and preferably have working knowledge of graphic design software.
