AIPLA is seeking a candidate with a J.D., extensive patent and other relevant intellectual property law experience as well as senior level management experience for its Deputy Executive Director of Legal Affairs position.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Deputy Executive Director of Legal Affairs performs a wide range of representational and communication functions relating to the Association’s preeminent role in judicial advocacy concerning intellectual property. This position is responsible for intellectual property matters involving the judiciary that are of concern to the Association. This position performs in-depth research and analysis on substantive and procedural topics of law for advising the Board of Directors, the Executive Director, and senior staff; and is responsible for communicating policy positions on the same to the government, to Association members, and to the public. It is expected that this position independently exercises significant discretion and judgment in carrying out assignments.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Monitors the activities of the U.S. Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals and other judicial bodies, as well as the Solicitor General’s Office, the USPTO Patent Trial and Appeal Board, the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and the International Trade Commission. Serves as the staff coordinator for the Association’s response to requests for comments on rulemaking and policy positions regarding matters of litigation, and as the principal manager of all judicial advocacy in which the Association participates, including consultation and liaison with the Board of Directors, AIPLA Committees, government offices and other NGOs.
Serves as Staff Liaison to the Amicus Committee, and other Committees as designated by the Executive Director and works with the committee leadership to help ensure efficient and effective committee operations in accordance with the Association’s Strategic Plan.
Writes and edits content for AIPLA publications, including AIPLA Direct and other technical-related materials for the Association’s publications and reviews AIPLA Quarterly Journal submissions for compliance with agreements between the Association and the publisher/editor. Works with the Marketing and Communication Manager to edit content for the daily Lexology submission.
Manages the Policy Assistant, with the Deputy Executive Director and the Deputy Executive Director for Regulatory Affairs.
The successful candidate will have a J.D and in-depth knowledge of the judicial process as it relates to intellectual property. A background in legal technical writing and an intellectual property law degree, along with five to ten years relevant work experience in written communications is required.Working relationships and experience in the USPTOis highly desirable, as are a proven track record of success in prior related work and superior communication skills. Senior management experience is greatly desired.
