The American Association for Justice, formerly the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, promotes justice and fairness for injured persons, safeguards victims' rights--particularly the right to trial by jury--and strengthens the civil justice system through education and disclosure of information critical to public health and safety.
Director of Communications
The Director of Communications is responsible for leading the association in carrying out long-term, national communications campaigns, raising awareness of the Association among the legal community, and assisting AAJ members and departments in messaging and media practices. The Director of Communications will report to the Chief Executive Officer.
Responsibilities of the Director of Communications include the following:
Oversee Communications Department strategic planning process;
Develop and oversee implementation of national, state, and industry earned media plans;
Manage day-to-day outreach efforts to press;
Oversee Communications staff and manage national and state press outreach as well as earned media strategies;
Cultivate relationships with reporters from national outlets and provide on-the-record comment to press;
Provide media support and advice to AAJ members, state trial lawyer associations, and coalition partners;
Work closely with Public Affairs team and press secretaries to develop and implement daily press plans and provide rapid response to attacks;
Oversee public opinion research related to AAJ’s policy priorities;
Participate in regular strategy sessions with Public Affairs, AAJ senior staff and AAJ consultants;
Develop and execute grassroots and digital advocacy plan, and oversee AAJ’s social media presence;
Develop and oversee grassroots public education campaign, Take Justice Back;
Manage internal communications regarding Public Affairs activities between AAJ departments;
Serve as liaison to AAJ’s member-driven Public Education Committee, and execute committee projects.

The Director of Communications will have 7-10+ years of communications experience. The following qualifications are required of this position:
Experience developing and implementing earned media, paid media and strategic plans;
Experience developing and implementing grassroots advocacy campaigns;
Experience developing and executing digital advocacy campaigns;
Experience providing on-the-record comment to reporters;
Proven track record of successfully managing a staff;
Strong writing skills and extensive experience creating press materials and message documents;
Commitment to issues important to AAJ and its members;
Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced atmosphere; and
Interest in working collaboratively with a team to accomplish goals.
