NOWCC, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit based in Arlington, VA is seeking a highly qualified professional to fill a full time Director of Accounting position. This position carries responsibilities for leading the overall performance of NOWCC’s Accounting Department. The position is responsible for managing the daily operations of the accounting department. The position performs highly specialized accounting work by overseeing the month- end close, budget and forecasting functions, expense analysis and compliance with Federal grant regulations. Directs and coordinates the activities of the accounting staff to review and record accurately and timely the revenues, expenditures, assets and liabilities of NOWCC. Along with the Vice President of Finance and Accounting, he/she works to ensure the fiscal health of the organization in support of its mission and strategic objectives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reconcile asset and liability accounts; creates schedules to support journal entries and balances in the general ledger, including prepaid expenses, accrued payroll, and budget variance reporting.
Prepare schedules and produces the documentation required for annual audit and 990, including 941 reconciliation.
Review and approve accounts payable activity ensuring proper supporting documentation and accurate coding of invoices and expense reports.
Reconcile operating bank accounts and record bank account activity in the general ledger daily.
Prepare weekly drawdown of federal funds using ASAP.gov to request funds for immediate cash needs.
Responsible for minimizing the time elapsed between the drawdown of funds and its subsequent disbursement.
Supervise, direct and review the work of the accounting team including cash reconciliations, accounts receivable and accounts payable transactions, expenses, etc.
Establish and enforce proper accounting methods, policies, procedures, and principles.
Monitor and analyze accounting data and produce financial reports and statements.
Maintain an organized set of detailed records and files to document financial transactions.
Review general ledger monthly to ensure accuracy of posting.
Resolve complex accounting issues and assist supervisor with resolving financial issues.
Responsible for ensuring cash management is reconciled and recorded correctly.
Makes and implements recommendations to improve accounting processes and procedures.
Ensure all accounting transactions comply with GAAP and Federal grant rules.
Compile and analyze financial information to prepare entries to accounts, such as general ledger accounts, documenting business transactions with effective internal controls and a strong audit trail.
Prepare managerial reports and analytical support to the VP of Finance
Assist in development and implementation of new procedures and features to enhance the workflow of the accounting department while maintaining compliance with Federal grants requirements.
Support budget and forecasting activities for the FY18 budget and indirect cost rate.
Reconcile cash draw downs to the appropriate funding source (Cooperative Agreements, Task Orders, Program)
Perform other duties as assigned or required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Expertise in understanding Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Familiarity with 2 CFR 200
Ability to effectively direct and supervise.
Ability to evaluate and interpret financial statements
Demonstrated financial analytical skills and ability to problem solve.
Knowledge of accounting policies and practices associated with payroll and benefits administration.
Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal and customer service skills required.
Ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment and to react with discretion under varying conditions.
Advanced computer skills on MS Office to include proficiency in Excel.
Proficiency in the use of automated accounting system software (currently Abila MIP).
High attention to detail and accuracy with the ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Experience with governmental/nonprofit accounting principles and procedures.
Proven knowledge of financial and accounting principles, practices, standards, laws and regulations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from a four-year college with a minimum of ten years’ related work experience. Supervisory experience required. Certified Public Accountant(CPA) required and MIP Accounting Software experience preferred. Solid understanding of GAAP, accounting principles, or an equivalent combination of education and experience leading to the ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Governmental/non-profit experience a plus.
